Today we're going to be talking about Juneteenth, what it is, why it is such an important holiday for black people, and then later we will dive into my thoughts about the recent bill.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. According to my sources, Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger announced that all enslaved people in Texas were free by order of President Abraham Lincoln. This was more than two years after Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared freedom for enslaved people in the Confederate states.

Juneteenth is also known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, or Black Independence Day. Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States and the achievements and contributions of African Americans to American society. Juneteenth is observed with various activities, such as festivals, parades, church services, music, food, and education.

Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Juneteenth is the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established in 1983. Juneteenth 2023 will occur on Monday, June 19.
